Yoga WORKSHOP for Sciatic Ease

May 3 (Sunday)
at 2:00 pm

Class length
135 minutes

Location
305 East Duval Street, Lake City, FL

Come relax and let go in this workshop!   This is a specialty workshop designed to strengthen the piriformis and release the hamstrings and hips. It is great for ease, comfort, and maintenance of the sciatic nerve.   We begin with a workshop discussion about various ways to keep muscles from impinging on the sciatic nerve, then we hit the mats for a gentle sequence.

You will learn simple movements for strengthening the piriformis muscle to alleviate its impingement on the sciatic nerve bundle. You will flow through a comprehensive practice that accelerates healing and comfort and receive tips for short, daily routines to maintain a healthy piriformis muscle.   It will include gentle twists and many variations and options for twists, all sorts of accessible hamstring stretches, and a variation on Kapotasana and Gomukhasana (the classical "Pigeon Pose" and Cow Faced Pose").

We will discuss various possible origins of sciatic discomfort, and a few quick self tests to help with your body awareness. This yoga practice also stretches and strengthens the gluteals, and promotes flexibility and stability in the hips and lower body, where gripping often contributes to a cranky sciatic nerve bundle. Your yoga practice, if continued, also provides more fluidity of movement and calmness of mind, all of which help with sciatic ease.

You'll also be given tips on what to do when sciatica pain flares, but please note this is not a substitution for medical care. In addition, if sciatic pain or discomfort originates from other issues (i.e. herniated disc) this might not be the perfect solution for your body.  Please note that this workshop is not intended for those suffering with acute sciatica—go see a doctor or licensed body worker or other health care practitioner for relief!

The good news is that these simple techniques can help prevent future pain, and are also helpful for those with repeated sciatic flare-ups. It is a wonderful and easy routine to do at home and is helpful even for those with no sciatic discomfort whatsoever! Because the routine is taught at a gentle pace and can be mastered by anyone with general mobility, this practice is also a good fit for those absolute beginners who want to try yoga. All participants will receive an informative study sheet that empowers you to continue healthy habits at home, so you can feel better physically, while also expanding a sense of hope, connection, and care to make daily living more pleasurable. Come let tightness go and have fun with yoga!

And, remember, this workshop includes our signature AHA Yoga detailed Workshop Study Guide, including information, tips, and illustrations, as well as a sequence,  to take home so you know you can integrate what you have learned, continue practicing at home, and move toward long term, lasting wellness and joy.
