YOGA FLOW TASTER is a wonderful doorway to my special course,
TAPAS: A Core-Building Yoga Sequence for Dedicated Practice. This is a special ONE-AFTERNOON ONLY 60-minute session so you can sample one of my two most popular 8-week courses at AHA Yoga,
Tapas. This hour is a good taster to let you experience the
work and deep opening and release created by a VINYASA FLOW type of yoga session, while trying out the specific Core-Building sequence of
TAPAS, a course created to
intensify your overall commitment and internal mental intensity required for
lasting change. Find out how this sequence feels for
YOU.
You'll be introduced to diaphragmatic breathing & preparing the mind for practice, why it is essential for regulating the nervous system and helps you get deeper into stretches safely and happily. Then we'll slip into some warm-ups for the upper body, hips, and abdominal muscles.
Then we'll start our first "VINYASA FLOW," as it is known in the yoga world. "Vinyasa" means "precise placement" and refers in this context to the
flowing nature of this yoga sequence, as students move from one pose to the next, coordinated with the breath. This particular sequence is meant to intensify "
Tapas," or the
inner heat of transformation that arises as a result of
intense and heartfelt practice.
Some yoga experience helpful, though not required. You do need basic mobility and the capacity to get up and down from the floor easily.
Tapas can be a
challenging, endurance-building vinyasa sequence that includes
upper-body strengthening, moving balances, longer holds for the quadriceps and hamstrings, and dynamic core work synced with the breath.
We'll do some classic poses that are sure to hit some of yoga pose favorites, such as High Lunge, Cat-Cow, Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Utkatasana (Fierce/Chair Pose), Balancing Cat, Planks & lots of variations of side planks, Virabhadrasna (Warrior) 3 with Movement, and Navasana (Upward Facing Boat), and Twists. But we will also add some playful transitions, variations, and long holds, to build our vitality and concentration!
This workshop is a great chance to learn safe and fun variations (at least FIVE ways!) to execute popular postures such as Vasisthasana, or Side Plank; using variations is a great way to build strength, concentration, and also enhance your yogic toolkit so you can choose wisely what fits for you at a SPECIFIC moment.
The most important part of yoga practice is learning how to
clear, guide, and refine the mind. "
Tapas" means "to heat," but this is not about the material body; it is about using yoga practice to purify obstructions to
clear-headedness and thus build wise
discernment.
In this evening workshop, you 'll work the body to remove the obstructions of muscular tension as well as mental gripping, sluggishness, and dispersal. In their place, you'll cultivate inner spaciousness as well as one-pointed mental absorption. Thus, it is as important to practice discipline of your thoughts--what you say, do, and consume--and this course fosters that rich and significant process.
We'll then wrap up and slow down with
gentle cool-down practice, including slower hip-openers of Kapotasana (Pigeon Pose) in either the backbend or forward bend version, and also add a deeper twist and shoulder release variation to the classic version. We'll gently move through a dynamic upper body version of Virasana (Hero's Pose) to get into the shoulders, refine alignment of the lower ribs, and release fatigue or strain int he feet and shins. Of course, this session then settles us down for a
long and luscious guided systematic relaxation (the best part!). You'll definitely go deeper in relaxation--perhaps even to a more meditative state!--after the building heat and release of the yoga flow of
TAPAS.

Note YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN YOGA MAT. If you use a studio mat, mat rental is $2 and you are responsible for sanitizing it after use. All other props--bolsters, blocks, straps, eye pillows, sandbags, and more--are included at the studio for your use.

Waiver and Terms & Conditions prior to class and be set-up and ready before the session beings. All registration paperwork and payment must be completed prior to class.
Payments are Final; all reservations are non-refundable, non-transferable to a different or future class, and there are no make-up sessions.
- If you have any medical concerns, injuries, allergies, are pregnant, or have any changes in such conditions, it is your duty & responsibility to inform your teacher prior to class.
- Your place is held only upon receipt of tuition payment.
- All purchases are final. Payments for this Yoga class is non-refundable, unless your class is taken off the schedule due to low enrollment, dire teacher emergency, or unavoidable natural disaster. You can transfer your pass to a friend if you need to cancel.
- There are NO pro-rated tuition fees for absences and NO make-up classes for missed days.
- Payments for this course are not transferable to a future class, series, term, or event. All passes expire the day of this workshop.
- Advise your teacher with 24-hours advance notice if you are unable to attend (text message is preferred) so another student on the waiting list can take your place.
- The teacher holds the right to cancel or reschedule any classes, sessions, or events due to extreme illness or emergencies. Students will be notified of the rescheduled date and every attempt will be made to accommodate each student’s schedule.

- Turn off or put all cell phones on silent.
- Do not leave valuable personal items in your vehicle; personal items may be stored in the prop room.
- Words and energy matter, ESPECIALLY for Dedicated Practice! This is your time to turn inward, and much care has been given to cultivating a sacred space. You and your colleagues are doing deep work when you undertake yoga. Please be respectful of your peers and teacher and maintain the calm, peaceful, and quiet space. This means this is not the time for gossip, complaining, or leftover conversations from work, or any less than tender-hearted, well-intended speech. Take this time and space to breathe and transition into your practice and allow your best self to shine. Speak quietly and take loud conversations outside.
- Please take your shoes off at the door of the studio to keep the floor clean and sanitary.
- Be on your mat and ready to go at the starting time.
- It’s best not to eat one hour prior to yoga; for some people, 2 hours are required.
- If anything can be done to make your experience more comfortable, secure, and successful, please let your teacher know (temperature, bathroom needs attention, you need to leave early, special concern, etc.). Suggestions to improve your yoga & meditation experience are always welcome.
- A separate Waiver & Release and Terms & Conditions for AHA Yoga must be completed and signed prior to practice on your first day (unless you are a returning student and have already signed this). Hard copies are available at the studio. Please arrive early as this must be completed PRIOR to attendance.
- Please BRING A YOGA MAT. If you use a shared studio mat, please note there is a $2 rental fee and it is your responsibility to sanitize it after each use (cleaning supplies provided). All other props (bolsters, blankets, blocks, hand weights, eye pillows, straps, etc) are provided; if you have preferred personal props, feel free to bring those.
