WORKSHOP: YIN Yoga for Happy Hips & Sunny Shoulders

February 17 (Sunday)
at 2:00 pm

Class length
120 minutes

Location
Suwannee River Yoga, 16548 Spring Street, White Springs, FL, 32096

YIN YOGA leads to very deep opening and release.  Its methods are slightly different than most “regular” (hatha & vinyasa) yoga classes where we hold poses for a few breath and often flow from posture to posture.

YIN YOGA incorporates long, passive holds of classical poses—most supine, on the floor—to release the deeper connective tissues of the body, in addition to the muscular most-often targeted in fitness classes as well as in many yoga methods. Holds range from 2-5 minutes.

YIN YOGA is a great option if you need to loosen tight places in your body. Because it requires lots of props, enrollment in this class is limited.

The focus is on taking the shape of the pose, finding stillness, and then STAYING.

Because of the slower nature of this class, YIN YOGA is often a much more meditative practice

Hence, it is incredibly beneficial to those with busy schedules and the frazzled and filled minds that often accompany such a pace.  You learn how to still and soothe the racing mind as much as your physical body. Because it requires us to slow down, the mental component of Yin Yoga is at the forefront. The internal challenges of YIN YOGA also then feedback into the physical release of tension, of surrender, and letting go.

It is not always an easy practice—surprisingly so, for such a slower pace!—but it is always richly rewarding.

New to YIN YOGA?  Then be sure to check out my article about it here.

This particular Yin Yoga practice is designed to be a very grounding and soothing session. It will begin with lengthening—rather than forcefully engaging—the muscles as well as tissues in the hip region. Taking time to mindfully breathe in a way that supports release and encourages healing, we’ll settle in and hold supine poses such as lizard lunges, pigeon, butterfly pose, side stretches and more.  Most postures, once held for a while, will also include ways to deepen the stretch ever so gently, slowly, and increasingly intensely.

The second half of this Yin Yoga workshop focuses on the shoulders, which are less often the target in yin sessions. It will include many variations on sphinx pose to help concentrate attention on delicate and sometimes fatigued areas of the shoulder girdle. We’ll also do gentle work to open the chest in a supine version of Cow-faced posture (don’t worry—it looks nothing like a cow!) and more.

This is a slow-paced practice with deep results, often including a softening the grip of mental and emotional tension, in addition to physical stretching and relaxation. You'll leave feeling more open on many levels so you can start your week with an increased sense of spaciousness.

Yin Yoga may look passive, but it is definitely attentive and effective work! The overall affect on the mind-body make is well worth the effort Yin Yoga requires; you leave the mat feeling more mobile and free.

Come join us on Sunday afternoon, February 17, so you flow through your week feeling physically relaxed and open, with a calm, clear mind, so that your time with family and friends is more pleasant and rewarding, as you stay present, comfortable, and a wee bit happier, savoring more openness in the hips and shoulders, but also with a little more sense of freedom in the mind's processes as well!

NOTE:  This special Yoga Workshop will be held at Suwannee River Yoga Studio in White Springs.
