This is a 4-week class. Students who register for class must commit to attending all four classes specific to that series at that same day/time until the class is completed. We do not allow hopping between class series as to not disturb the unique flow each class and the participating students develop along the way.

What does it mean to be "great in the crate?" The end goal of crate training is a dog who will go into a crate, kennel, or carrier when asked and remain there, comfortable and relaxed, in a variety of situations, both alone and in the middle of the action. A dog who's "great in the crate" can be safely and easily confined wherever they are, whether at home, in the car, in a hotel room, or at a dog sports event.

Does that sound like a lot? It is! Individual dogs get "stuck" on different pieces of the complete puzzle. In this four-week, self-paced style class, you and your dog can get a broad overview of crate training, or focus in on one particular element that you'd like to improve. With fun, easy-to-train exercises you can practice at home, students will be coached on building the following Crate Skills:

  • Entering on cue, from a distance, past distractions
  • Impulse control for patient, calm exits
  • Settling/relaxing inside the crate
  • Door closed? No big deal!
  • Remaining calm with activity around the crate
When it comes to crating for longer periods and leaving your dog alone in the crate, instructors can talk through individual challenges, recommend next steps, and help you decide if your dog needs more help. However, for practical reasons, these skills will not be practiced during class time.

Crates will be provided! Students may also bring their own pop-up crates or small carriers to class if desired.

Two Important Notes:

1. Great in the Crate is a group class that takes place in one of our smaller rooms. Dogs who have trouble focusing on food in the presence of other dogs or people should work on calm crating in private lessons.

2. Dogs who panic--specifically when left alone--require more than crate training, and unfortunately this class will not address those issues in detail. However, even those dogs can benefit from non-isolated crate training! Contact our Training Ambassadors for more info.
