HERBAL HOUR: Journeying with the Living Wisdom of Plants, ROSELLE (Hibiscus)

HERBAL HOUR: Journeying with the Living Wisdom of Plants
Yoga is often described as a journey inward—but we don't journey inward simply to stay there:
Through movement, breath, meditation, and contemplation, we learn to quiet habitual reactions, refine our attention, and perceive ourselves more clearly.
Then we can turn that clearer awareness outward: to see more of what is actually here, receive the world more fully, and discover how our lives are deeply woven into the living world always already around us.
This online contemplative experience is where science and spirituality meet:
Careful consideration and observation combine with embodied relaxation, meditation, and visualization to deepen our yogic skills. Yoga then blossoms into its vaster potentials, as we cultivate intuitive capacities that open us to new ways of encountering a larger, wondrous, and more-than-human world.
Each month, we'll encounter one sacred yet accessible plant in intimate detail, exploring both its practical medicine and what sustained attention to this particular living being might teach us about ourselves.
We'll learn how the plant has traditionally been used, its chemical constituents and their impact within the body, and ways you might incorporate it into everyday life.
But this goes beyond the extractive mindset to, instead, shift towards relationship and reciprocity: We'll also explore its ecology, subtle energetics, history and folklore, and the distinctive patterns it expresses in the world. Through guided relaxation, breath practices, visualization, sensory exploration, contemplation, fire ceremonies, tea rituals, and other experiential practices, we move toward cultivating a more nourishing, impactful way of being.
Each gathering offers practical herbal knowledge while inviting broader inquiries: What becomes possible when we learn to quiet ourselves enough to notice what is actually here? What might the living world reveal when we become more capable of receiving it? And how might those relationships help us become clearer, more resilient, more radiant participants in life?
This Month's Plant Elder:
Sometimes life gradually becomes something we're managing rather than fully inhabiting. Stress, repetition, responsibility, and accumulated disappointment can dull our capacity to be moved by the world...or feel motivated about where we're headed. Roselle (aka Hibiscus or Red Sorrel) invites us to recover our rasa—our taste for life: Our receptivity to pleasure, beauty, connection, nourishment, and the experience of being vividly alive.
A tropical hibiscus, Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) reaches its moment of ripeness as October arrives, swelling into brilliant crimson calyces just as the light begins to wane. Tart, vivid, and abundant, it offers a fitting medicine for this threshold season: an invitation to savor what is uplifting, powerful, and precious while it is here.
We'll connect these contemplations to Roselle's long history as a beloved food and medicine and its particular affinity with the heart and circulation—exploring its anthocyanins and antioxidants, traditional cardiovascular and cooling uses, and research into blood pressure and metabolic health.
Through embodied relaxation and truly invigorating breathwork designed to shift us from ordinary thinking into a more receptive, imaginal state, we'll open the gates of perception before moving into guided visualization (aka journeying/active imagination). Here we'll encounter Roselle not simply as something to study, but as a living presence with which to enter relationship.
As autumn reminds us that everything changes, Roselle invites us beyond merely getting through our days and toward ripeness, receptivity, and wholehearted participation:
How fully can we receive this life, savor it, and allow ourselves to be enlivened by it while it is here?
