Who is this class for?
This class is for everyone. Trauma-informed practices including offering choice, respecting consent, and encouraging body awareness create a more welcoming and empowering experience for all, whether you're new to yoga, returning after time away, or simply looking for a gentler, more intentional practice.
What is Trauma-Informed Yoga?
Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) is an approach to yoga that recognizes how trauma can affect the entire mind-body system. Through movement, breath, and rest, the practice prioritizes safety, choice, and curiosity rather than performance or perfection. While it is not therapy or a substitute for mental health care, it can be a meaningful complement to therapy and other healing practices.
How is this class different?
Rather than striving for the "perfect" pose, you'll be invited to notice your own experience and choose what feels supportive for your body.
In this class you can expect:
Invitational rather than directive language
Options and modifications throughout
Freedom to rest, skip movements, or choose another variation
No expectation to push through discomfort
A consent-centered environment where physical touch is never offered without your explicit permission—and may not be offered at all
You are the expert on your own body.
Trauma-informed yoga supports overall well-being by helping participants build awareness of their bodies, breath, and nervous system responses in a choice-centered environment. Many people find it helps cultivate:
Body awareness
Increased self-trust and confidence in making choices
Awareness of stress responses
More self-compassion
A greater sense of presence, safety, and connection
Liz Kovarsky (she/her) is a yoga teacher trained in Power Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga for Addiction Recovery, Trauma-Informed Yoga, and Thai Bodywork/Assisted Yoga. She is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with extensive experience supporting people and communities impacted by trauma.
Liz believes healing happens through reconnecting with our bodies, cultivating nervous system flexibility, and finding meaningful connection in community. Her teaching emphasizes curiosity over perfection, choice over obligation, and compassion over performance.
This class is offered on a sliding scale of $0–$75 so that cost is not a barrier to participation. Please use the sliding scale guide to choose the payment level that best reflects your current circumstances.
Liz also offers private Trauma-Informed Yoga sessions that may include asana (postures), pranayama (breath practices), and Assisted Yoga/Thai Bodywork, with every element offered through explicit choice and informed consent.

Trauma does not occur in a vacuum. Our experiences are shaped by our families, communities, identities, and the systems we live within. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, colonialism, poverty, and other forms of oppression can profoundly impact the nervous system and sense of safety. We believe trauma-informed practice must also be culturally responsive and attentive to these realities. While no space can feel equally safe for everyone, we are committed to continually learning, listening, and creating an environment where people with diverse identities and lived experiences feel respected, supported, and empowered to make choices that meet their needs.
