June: Beginning Still Life Drawing
Drawing can understandably feel intimidating - especially drawing with some intention of making things look realistic. But it really doesn't have to feel that way!
With this drawing series I am *not* trying to show you how to draw a picture that looks like a photograph - I want you to make art that looks like you. All skill levels are welcome and all styles are encouraged.
In this class I will be talking you through how to even begin to approach a still life - what to look at, how to think about spacing and composition, what techniques you might use to express certain elements and why, etc. This class will be mostly fast drawing exercises where we are not looking to create finished drawings but instead are exploring the many processes and challenges of translating 3D items in front of us into 2D elements on paper. The information provided here will be useful no matter how realistic or abstract you might like to be in your work and will be an excellent primer for the following three Consistent Craft summer classes.
Please bring your favorite drawing implements, paper, and an object or two that you would like to draw. I will have some of these items on hand incase you need them - the most important thing is you come ready to play!
----------
This workshop is about *the practice* and about creating creative work over time - to be engaged in the art of making consistently - whatever that might look like for you. No one at Consistent Craft is going to tell you to get up every. single. morning. at 5AM to bust out 5 pages of writing or tell you you need to draw something every single day no matter what is going on in your life.
The hope is we can get together and help you figure out how to bring art and writing into your life in a way that actually makes sense to you and makes you feel better, not worse, about practicing.
Expect classes to include generative methods to fall back on when you're stuck, writing exercises to engage with your own creative processes, and lots of chatting with other creative folks who are all in on the practice just like you! Sharing is always optional, feedback on work is given only with the express consent of the artist or writer - really we're here to make work that can be *just for you*.
About your instructor:
Sarah (they/them) is an artist and writer working in Cumberland, Maine. They teach both movement and craft classes at ECC because they think the practice of each is deeply connected! What we learn from one can enlighten us in the other and as artists we need to tend our bodies as we tend our minds. Their teaching style is a lot about encouraging autonomy, asking questions, and creating a safe space for you to be experimental in your body and your mind. Expect them to be metaphorical, light-hearted, and to come with a really solid playlist.
Sarah studied philosophy, writing, and visual arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada. They hold certificates to teach Yoga, Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga. When they aren't teaching they're working on their zine Wastrel, hanging out with other people's dogs, or painting still-lifes in their quiet little house.
