Protest Quilts: Raw Edge for the Revolution
with Maddy Magnuson

May 17 (Saturday)
at 12:00 pm

Class length
180 minutes

This Pride Month, join Maddy for a hands-on workshop where we will apply the easy and versatile sewing technique - raw edge applique - to create liberatory signs for Pride month. In this space, we’ll honor the rich legacy of LGBTQ+ resistance and joy through the bold technique of raw edge applique—a perfect method for making loud, unapologetic art from soft materials.

Together, we’ll explore how quilting has been used throughout history to speak truth, hold memory, and demand change—especially by communities pushed to the margins. Then we’ll begin to stitch our own protest quilts in community, creating powerful personal and collective statements through fabric, thread, and care.

Whether you're hand sewing or using a machine, a supply list will be emailed after registration with flexible options. No experience needed—just bring yourself, your pride, and your passion.

Let’s quilt for revolution—one raw edge at a time.

Your Host:
Maddy Magnuson (they/them) is a California-raised Maine transplant, with a lifelong love of sewing and quilting. Raised by their mom in Sacramento, Maddy crafted everything from Halloween costumes to prom dresses. After moving to Maine for college, they made their first hand-quilted masterpiece—a farm scene—for their boss. A sewing hiatus followed, but in 2022, Maddy rediscovered their quilting passion with an Intro to Quilting class, quickly cranking out 8 quilts using a secondhand machine. Now, they create colorful, one-of-a-kind quilts for loved ones. When not quilting, Maddy can be found chasing their toddler, gardening, hiking, or advocating for inclusive sex ed at Maine Family Planning. They live in Bath with their family and a menagerie of pets!
