Small Table Veneering with Chance Coalter

In this class students will build a side table entirely from raw materials.
Materials included in the price.  Please bring your own safety equipment.

The tables base will be made of solid wood, which students will mill and then template route to a set of mdf templates and put together using simple mortise and tenon joinery. Building the base in this way allows it to be made relatively quickly and exposes the student to process and design considerations for making multiples.

The tops will be made of an MDF substrate and veneered. Each student will create their own unique pattern for the tops, using a radial match technique that is suited to a waterfall edge, where the grain from the top continues down the edge of the table and seems to fold over the table.

We will use hand tools and jigs to create both the top and base, and students will learn how to create and use jigs and templates to make their process fast and effective. We will use jigs and templates to create the base, create the radial match top, glue up the base and the waterfall edge. There will also be demonstrations on more advanced techniques such as creating a waterfall edge on an angled top, inlay techniques and more complex radial matches. Students will each build their own side table, but also be inspired by each other, and use our collective creativity to push our learning further and develop new ideas for future projects.
