The boxes will be constructed using a fun miter-fold technique that allows you to do all of your joinery on a table saw, creating an enclosed box with seamless corners that involves cutting away the lid after the box is glued up (and gluing up without traditional clamps).
Each student will create their own unique pattern in veneer for the faces of the box, using techniques that include jigs for the table saw, router, and use of a veneer saw, scalpel, hand plane, etc.
We will learn about atmospheric pressure and use the vacuum press to glue up our box parts. Once the box is glued up and the lid is cut away, we will install quadrant hinges to finish up the box.
There will also be demonstrations on more advanced techniques to enhance the boxes, such as inlaying a complex pattern into the lid of the box, and adding a decorative and protective wood edging. We will each make our own box, but also be inspired by each other, and use our collective creativity to push our learning further and develop new ideas for future projects.
