Finishing is part art and part science. When you understand the fundamentals of wood technology, the steps involved in finishing, the products used, how to create finishing test pieces, and how to approach wood finishing as a problem solving activity, the likelihood of a successful outcome increases dramatically.

Students will:
• Learn how to approach wood finishing as a problem-solving activity;
• Learn how to write a finishing plan;
• Learn how to prepare a finishing test piece.

Course Highlights:
• Wood Technology: A review of the fundamentals of wood technology as related to wood finishing;
• The Finishing Decision Tree: Wood finishing as a process-driven activity;
• Prep Is Everything: How to prepare wood to receive a finish;
• Field Trip: A review of the finishing products sold at Rockler Woodworking & hardware;
• Test Pieces: Each student will:
  - Prepare a test piece to receive a finish.
  - Write a finishing plan.
  - Apply finishing products to their test piece.

During the fourth class meeting, the instructor will help each student present their Finishing Test Piece to the class. We will talk about what worked, what didn't, and what to do differently next time.
The process of asking questions and discussing each student's Finishing Test Piece helps drive home the concepts of a Systematic Approach to Finishing in a way that students find fun and memorable.
