Phil Stivers has taught, for several years, woodbending and in particular Shaker Oval Box making at Palomar College. That era has come to an end, as Palomar College has discontinued this class. So this class in oval box making will be the first time it has been offered in 2 years. We are fortunate to have Phil teach this class. Phil has studied oval box making at the workshop of the Dean of Box Making, John Wilson in Michigan, and our provider of box making material. Phil has a passion for all things round or not square.
The class will involve learning the various steps of oval box making, as well as experiencing hot water woodbending challenges. Understanding the behavior of wood when bending.
For this class each participant will make 3 oval boxes, Sizes 1, 2, and 3 of maple wood. All material and tools required for this class will be provided which is included in the registration fee.
Two days are required to permit drying of the boxes after the hot water bath prior to bending.
