Pre-requisite: Introduction to Woodworking Part 1
Part 2 of the Introduction to Woodworking series will be a project based continuation of woodworking fundamentals beyond those introduced in Part 1.
Students should bring their class notes from Part 1 to the class for reference because not much time will be available for extensive review of that material.
Project:
- Students will build a stepstool using the red oak panel they book-matched in Part 1.
- Students will be encouraged to create design variations of their own, a design example will be provided
- The project will incorporate box joints and wedged mortise and tenons
- Finishing of the step stool will be with a tung oil finish.
Student will learn:
- How to make a box joint jig
- Use a dado blade to make box joints
- Use a template with a plunge router and guide bushing to create mortises
- Use bench chisels to square the ends of the mortises using hand-tool techniques.
Additional new material will include:
- geometry of wedged tenons,
- use of a simple band saw jig to make wedges,
- use of a flush trim bit with a template to route curved edges
- a demonstration of tung oil finishing.
