Learn the safety and basics of turning and become certified for using the shop lathes.  The class concludes by making a tool handle, applying a ferrule and a finish.


In this class, students will learn:


  • The safety and basics of turning  
  • Lathe components and turning tools
  • Tool sharpening and use 
  • How to perform the basic cuts on spindles: V-groove, coves and beads


The class concludes with the student making a tool handle, including the application of a ferrule and a finish.  This class will help prepare you to get the certification necessary to use the shop lathes.


Class Schedule: One, 5-hour session 

Prerequisites: None


Membership RequirementsFor insurance purposes, this class requires membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association.  Annual dues are $35.  If you are not already a member, please join here: https://sdfwa.org/memberships  For insurance reasons, all SDFWA classes require students to be at least 18 years old.

  1. Up to two weeks notice: Full refund
  2. Up to one week notice: 50% refund or credit
  3. Less than one week notice or failure to appear: No refund or credit
  4. Class canceled: Full refund

If a class does not have an adequate number of registered students one week prior to the posted start date, the class may be canceled.
