The Mortise and Tenon (MT) joint is the principal furniture-making joint used in tables and chairs and certain casework. This class will focus on practicing the steps needed to make a MT joint using hand tools, along with discussion of power tool options.
After completing this class, students will be able to:
- Describe woodworking situations when the MT is a preferred joint.
- Demonstrate how to lay-out a MT joint.
- Demonstrate proper technique using a marking gauge, hand saw, and chisels.
- Practice making a MT joint using hand tools.
- Describe the role of the table saw, router, drill press and band saw in making MT joints.
- Describe three common variations of the MT joint.
