If you have been woodworking for even a short time you probably have a bench plane somewhere in you woodshop.  There, but not used because it didn't cut the way it should or you couldn't get the blasted thing to work at all. The truth of the matter is that with a few distinguished exceptions planes need to be tuned straight from the store.  Maybe the plane(s) in your shop have sat so long that they have rusted and appear unusable.

THEN - This class is for you. SDFWA Member Shop is fortunate to have Greg Wease teach this class. Known for his many presentations at Rockler and the locally famous Art and Craft of Planemaking course at Palomar College. Greg possesses a wealth of knowledge about hand planes and will be able to walk you through the process of restoring and tuning your handplane.

Bring a handplane(s) to work on. If you don't have a plane needing restoring we might be able to loan one to you for the class, contact us separately prior to the class.

The class will include:

  1. Discussion of typical bench planes and their parts with additional comments on unique features of other planes. Also included will be issues with old plane conditions that are fixable and those that are beyond help and strong candidates for the "future anchor" category. .
  2. Bring your own hand plane in need of restoration or new one that needs tuning
  3. Rust removal materials will be provided.
  4. Demonstrations of disassembly, cleaning plane parts and basic sharpening techniques of plane blades.
Truing the sole of your plane and knowing the critical places of the sole.

This class will not include working on wooden hand planes.
