This ‘Ori Tahiti 4-week series will focus on the form and style of ‘Ōte’a, a traditional dance from the island of Tahiti. This foundations class will cover multiple aspects, such as basic movement terminology, musical rhythms, choreography, and improvisation. We will build on the basic movements to then participate in a piece that uses both choreographed and improvised dance. In addition to the dance and music, participants will learn the cultural, historical, and contemporary significance of ‘Ōte’a, and how to engage with cultural dance as conscientious and open learners, dancers, and storytellers.
