Like mat pilates, reformer pilates improves strength, flexibility and balance, as well as coordination, posture, mental focus and body alignment. Like mat pilates, there’s a strong focus on strengthening the core. But the added resistance of the springs, which can be adjusted, and the instability of the sliding platform provide more opportunities for progression – and with it, a more powerful, dynamic workout – than mat-based pilates.
